Competitions
The club runs a number of competitions with various formats throughout the year.
For all of our competitions, the emphasis is very much on holding a fun social event. So, whatever your standard of play, please do not be put off by the competitive description and don’t worry if you don't understand the rules, they are not complicated and other members will be happy to explain them. Come along and have a go!
This year’s competition dates are shown below. Our competitions are open to anyone wishing to play and guests are very welcome. The entry fee is £5 for members and £7 for guests.
Please note that the course is generally closed for approximately 3-4 hours whilst competitions are in progress.

How Our Competitions Work
There is no need to pre-register for the competitions; you can decide on the day, preferably arriving 10-15 minutes before the tee-off time. For our competitions we play two rounds of nine holes each (missing out 5, 7 & 8) and have a shotgun start so that the competition can be completed in a reasonable time frame. We play as two, three or four ball, depending on how many people turn up on the day. Everyone picks a card from a hat to determine who you play with.
For Stapleford format competitions, we score points as follows. It’s the same principle as normal Stableford points, but starts with a higher score for a par, which is helpful for the weaker players who can otherwise end up with very few points. The highest number of points at the end wins.
Par – 3 points
One under par – 4 points
Two under par – 5 points
One over par – 2 points
Two over par – 1 point
We have devised a ‘handicap system’ for the purposes of our own competitions only. This means that for Stapleford format competitions the best players usually have to deduct points from their total and the weaker players get to add points to their total score. For strokeplay competitions that is reversed, i.e. the best players add their handicap and the weaker players deduct their handicap from their score.
New players to the competitions start on scratch and we adjust their competition handicap (along with everyone else who played), after each game. Because of this, no one playing in a competition for the first time can win, but obviously they can once a handicap has been set for them.
